The North Carolina Department of Transportation is building an expressway extending nearly 20 miles from US 74 near I-485 in Mecklenburg County to US 74 between the towns of Wingate and Marshville in Union County. US 74 serves as an important commercial corridor for Union and Mecklenburg County residents and businesses, giving many retail, commercial and employment centers direct access to and from the route.
The Monroe Expressway will improve mobility and capacity within the project study area by providing a facility for the US 74 corridor that allows for high-speed regional travel while maintaining access to properties along the existing highway. The approximate construction cost is $450 million and is expected to open to traffic in early 2019.
ESP is serving as a sub-consultant on this project to provide project inspection and testing for both bridges and roadway. The Monroe Expressway will use electronic tolling similar to the Triangle Expressway.
