Oakbrook Ashley River Preserve • Connectivity • Environmental Education
Working alongside National Park Service and Dorchester County’s Rivers & Waterways Commission, ESP led a master planning effort to preserve and develop a one-mile scenic corridor along each side of the Ashley River.
The final master plan incorporates passive and active recreation, defines distinctive stretches of the river, and ties them together with wayfinding signage to sites such as Middleton Place, Colonial Dorchester, and The Woodlands Nature Reserve.
For implementation, ESP designed Oakbrook Ashley River Preserve, a 50-acre riverside park with natural open space and river access that connects to a larger trail system within the Town of Summerville. Creatively incorporated into the natural landscape, design includes an environmental education center, boardwalks, fishing piers, boat and kayak launches, playground, picnic areas, and restrooms.
